Transparency Quilt Challenge
When the Modern Quilt Guild announced their Transparency Challenge for QuiltCon 2025, I was eager to explore the illusion of transparency in modern quilts. The challenge is to create a visual illusion through fabric selection, color placement, or an innovative combination of elements.

How it Started

After experimenting with transparency in my quilt It's Not What it Seams, I felt I had more to explore. In that quilt I pieced all white blocks and used black batting to create the design.

Initial Sketches
I wanted to experiment with the same white, pieced fabric overtop black batting technique to create the design. In contrast to my previous quilt, this time I wanted to use improv piecing.

Late one night, inspiration struck, and I quickly sketched a loose concept for this quilt in the margins of my journal (left photo). By morning, I refined the sketch into a more structured plan (right photo). The design centers on an improv-pieced base in white fabric, with a gradient of tiny piecing in the center that gradually expands outward toward the edges. For this quilt, I contrasted the organic piecing with bold, clean lines appliqued on top—something rare in quilting since straight lines are typically pieced. However, I opted for applique to maintain the smooth, uninterrupted flow of the improv piecing without visible seams.
